Body Acceptance

I see so many weight loss blogs that struggle with body acceptance. They keep saying “I will love my body when…” and things of that nature.

During your weight loss journey, you should not only be learning how to better nourish your body, but learn to accept your body. Otherwise, you will never be satisfied. You are you. There is no reason for you to strive to have someone else’s  legs or abs. I’m going to be honest and tell you that sometimes your body doesn’t agree with you. You may want something for it that it doesn’t want. Always remember just how amazing your body is. It deserves to be loved and respected. Beating yourself up about your body is a terrible motivator. It creates more self-loathing. And even if it doesn’t feel like it, you will always be able to find something you like about your body. When you have those bad days, because we all do - just embrace that part of yourself. Do something that makes you happy instead of spending that time bashing yourself. Building a positive body image is something that is incredibly difficult to do and is a long ongoing process. You can’t expect to read something like this and instantly love your body, because lets be realistic - that’s not going to happen. You slowly have to realize that you are who you are. We can’t physically or mentally change everything all at once. Everything takes time. In the society we’ve grown to love I feel we have not been able to appreciate time. Everything just seems so instant, and we’ve grown impatient. But we can’t be impatient with our bodies. That is a set up for failure. Learn to love yourself and be happy, don’t expect things to always go your way and don’t expect things to happen overnight. Be content. Be patient. Be observant. Listen to your body. It’s incredible the things you’ll hear once you are tuned in to listen.

Weight Loss Tips

  • Do not skip meals - Skipping meals is one of the worse things you can do. You need to eat frequent small meals.  That way your body is always satisfied and it increases your metabolism.
  • Drink enough water - Remember that if you work out you need to drink more than the recommended amount of water you need in a day. When you sweat, you are losing water. It’s really easy to become dehydrated and not know it. Also, a lot of times dehydration can be mistaken for hunger because they have the same side effects. Be on the safe side, drink more water!
  • Don’t let friends/family discourage you - I know lots of people have family and friends who don’t support them on their weight loss journey. You have to ignore the negativity. It’s about you, not them. You are changing your life! Also, just because those around you are eating bad, doesn’t mean you have to! It’s good to always have something in your bag. (An apple, a nut bar, etc.)
  • Get enough sleep - A lot of people don’t believe this one, but sleep does in fact make you lose weight! It’s good to get a good nights rest and be set in a regular routine. Stop going to bed at 2 A.M every night!
  • Don’t eat before bed - A lot of parents enforce this idea on us as we grow up because food gives our bodies energy and parents don’t like having their kids bouncing off the walls before bed. But as we grow up and have more freedom we usually don’t think about the consequences of eating before bed, when we really should. You shouldn’t eat 2-3 hours before you are set to go to bed. You don’t want that food sitting in your stomach over night, trust me.
  • Get a partner - It’s definitely a great idea to get a fitness partner! That way you will always have someone around you with the same goals in mind. Things become easier when you have someone to relate to. Not all partners work out though, so if the person you’re working with quits…don’t give up! Show ‘em what they’re missing. Later on they will have wished they didn’t quit.
  • Listen to some good tunes - Find music that fits the type of workout you are doing. It’s nice to have some upbeat music when doing Cardio. And real mellow music when doing things like stretching/yoga/deep breathing. Personally one song that always gets me going is Fort Minor - Remember the name. This is ten percent luck, 20 percent skill, 15 percent concentrated power and will, five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain, and 100 percent reason to remember the name.
  • Do it the natural way - Don’t use diet pills, don’t have some dramatic surgery, and don’t use some crazy cream. Shed pounds the right way. By changing your diet and exercise. Its not natural for you to lose weight taking a pill. Think about it - you are still eating the gross McDonalds Hamburgers and French Fries and Pizza and greasy Tacos anddddd everything else…but you drop like 50 pounds. -.- get real. Sound healthy to you? Think about what its actually doing to your body! Being skinny doesn’t make you healthy, and that’s what you should be aiming for!
  • Be conscious of what type of calories you are putting into your body - Just because something is low in calories doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Do me a favor and look at the entire label. Your body will love you much more, trust me.
  • Don’t reward yourself with bad food - You know how weight loss blogs give themselves rewards for when they reach a certain weight? Well, I’ve seen blogs reward themselves with bad food! Ice cream/a bag of chips/ etc. That’s just taking a step back…so, I would suggest you not do that.
  • Everything in moderation - You hear this a lot, and well..that’s because it’s true. It works!
  • Find positive motivation - Don’t just look at pictures of skinny women. First off, you all should know…everything is photo shopped. Second, your goal shouldn’t be to get skinny, but to be healthy. Looking at a toned body is different than looking at a skinny body. Know the difference.
  • Make working out apart of your schedule - Don’t let other plans come between you and your workout. Set a time, and stick to it.
  • Don’t eat your emotions - This is an obvious one…
  • Having trouble controlling how much you eat? - Try counting calories! After awhile you get used to how much you can have and you won’t need to anymore. But it’s a great way to start, trust me. Downloading an app really helps too. Or making an online My Fitness Pal account.
  • Watch what you drink - Drinking sweet juices all day definitely rack up those calories! Even if it doesn’t seem like it. You have to pay attention to what you drink just as much as you do to what you eat.
  • Use smaller dishes - smaller cups, smaller plates, smaller bowls. We’ve grown up learning to finish everything on our plate, which is actually a bad habit to get into. It’s better to leave food on your plate. And by using a smaller dish, you are unable to serve yourself large amounts.
  • Drink lots of green tea - Green tea also increases weight loss. You can google tons of articles on the subject, and you’d be amazed.
  • As you get smaller, buy new clothes - It seems to be a rumor that if you continue to lose weight and wear the same old clothes you can get discouraged. So it’s best that after losing a good amount of weight (around 20 lbs) you buy a few new things. So each time you hit another 20 pound mark, but some new shirts or new workout clothes! Also, by buying things that better fit your body more people are likely to notice changes in your body because you’re not hiding under that extra fabric!
  • Make realistic goals - It’s okay to have an overall goal, but don’t focus on that. Focus on small goals first. Otherwise you can get discouraged.
  • Don’t leave the house hungry - Odds are if you leave the house hungry you will be more likely to eat out, which we all know is probably not as good for you.
  • Weigh in once a week - Whatever you do, DO NOT weigh yourself before your weigh in day. If you weigh yourself more than once a week you can get extremely discouraged by what you see. Set one day a week where you weigh yourself. And try to weigh yourself at the same time everyday.
  • Don’t eat while doing other activities - That takes your attention away from your food. While you eat you should eat slowly and pay attention to your bites.
  • Dance while you clean - Seems silly I know, but its a fun way to burn more calories and get shit done.
  • Don’t binge - ‘Nuff said. But if you do end up doing it, don’t beat yourself up. One mistake in one long ass journey…not that bad. Remember, its a lifestyle change. Which means its for lifeeeee.
  • Keep yourself busy - If you sit at home all day you’ll be more tempted to eat due to boredom. Avoid that at all costs.
  • Put inspiration on your fridge - That way every time you go to snack you can remind yourself of what you really want.
  • Eat the color green - As long as its not mold, if its green…you’re set. (:
  • If you can pronounce the ingredient then don’t eat it - Odds are, its a shit load of chemicals.
  • When you feel like eating when you know you don’t eat it - Brush your teeth!
  • “Work hard in the gym, work harder in the kitchen” - The quote pretty much explains itself. People always wonder why they work out so hard but are not seeing any results and its usually because they fail to change their diet. Remember weight loss is 70% diet 30% exercise.
